Fixing un-geocoded locations

When you add locations to Storemapper, our servers “geocode” them by looking up the address and finding the exact latitude and longitude of each location so we can place it on the map. Sometimes we are unable to find an exact match and your dashboard will show that you have some “ungeocoded locations.” You can click the link to view them and diagnose the problem.

If you are uploading your locations via CSV or Google drive, there is a “latitude, longitude and Storemapper ID” column. These fields can be left blank as they will be updated automatically when you import your sheet back into your account.

How to fix your un-geocoded stores

Let’s say you import your stores over and you receive a notification that some of your locations could not be geocoded. You have some options on how you can fix these.

1. Manually fix each location on the edit page. Log in to your Storemapper dashboard, find the location and click “Edit.” On this screen use the manual geocoder at the bottom of the page to adjust the location. You can do this via dragging and dropping the pin.

2. You can also look up the address either from the box next to your geocoded pin (at the bottom of the page) or from the address search bar. The address search bar is auto-completed based on Google maps and will ensure your pin is dropped in the correct location.

3. Sometimes you just need to change the format of the addresses to make sure the geocoder can find the exact location. A common test is to go to maps.google.com and type in the address. If it goes to the address immediately then we should be able to geocode it. If the address is vague such as just a street name, its possible the system will not be able to geocode correctly as it does not know which street in which City you want so its important to provide more details.

From your Storemapper dashboard, locate the address and select the space bar and it should then populate all locations it can find from Google maps.

You can then select the correct address.

4. If you do have the latitude and longitude of the address, you can add this manually via the dashboard or via your CSV.

Common problems/fixes include:

* Adding the country to the end of the address can help the geocoder figure out the location. This is particularly useful with countries where the English version can have many different spellings.* Australian zip codes need to be fully spelled out. “NSW” must be New South Wales, etc.
